“This 53-year-old patient had a collapsed L5-S1 disc, retrolisthesis and foraminal stenosis contributing to severe low back pain. She had tried years of conservative (non-operative) treatment including physical therapy and injections without relief. At Texas NeuroSpine Surgery, we will always continue make every effort to treat your low back pain from a collapsed disc without surgery. However, surgery is appropriate for some carefully selected cases.
For this patient who had years of debilitating back pain, the solution was an ‘anterior-posterior’ or ‘front-back’ lumbar spine surgery (3rd photo). The surgery is also known as an ALIF (Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion) with posterior stabilization.
She had a brief hospital stay and was pain-free after only a few weeks. At six weeks, she was back to work and her normal daily routine. While not every case has such a quick or complete recovery, surgery can potentially offer help when no other treatments have.”
